Statement of teaching and research interests:
Dr. Van Doorn would describe his teaching as filled with joy and the love of learning itself, based on thorough preparation, grounded in the classics, yet utilizing innovative techniques. It seeks to be high-fidelity; that is, the transmission of knowledge that is accurate, reflective and critically derived, as Dr. Van Doorn has written about in an article (Van Doorn and Van Doorn, 2015). Students comment often about my enthusiasm for my subjects and my ability to transform subject matter into riveting sessions, even in classes lasting four hours. Dr. Van Doorn utilize techniques to get students more engaged in classwork such as role play, debates, round robins and the flipped classroom.
Dr. Van doorn research interests are both broad and specific. Dr. Van Doorn is fascinated by all aspects of International Law, having co-authored a major text on the subject (below). Dr. Van Doorn research interests have also included comparative democratization and predictive models of democratic instability. Dr. Van Doorn current research project explores a new hybrid model of civilian NGO-military humanitarian intervention in conflict zones.
