Graduate Faculty Application Process

Application Deadlines

  • Fall: by 5:00 p.m. on the third Friday in September
  • Spring: by 3:00 p.m. on the second Friday in March
Step 1: Submit Application

Submit your completed Graduate Faculty Application to your Department Head/Division Director by the appropriate deadline.

Step 2: Department Review
  • If approved, the Department Head/Division Director will sign the application and forward it to the Academic Dean.
  • For Divisions, the application will be forwarded directly to the Associate Provost of Graduate Studies and Research.
Step 3: If Not Approved
  •  If the Department Head/Division Director does not support the nomination, the faculty member may appeal by forwarding all application materials directly to the Dean of the Academic College/Division for review.
  • In all cases, the Department Head will provide written notification of the decision to both the faculty member and the Dean/Division Director.

Step 4: Dean/Division Review

The Dean of the Academic College or Division Director will review, sign, and forward the application (with recommendations) to the Associate Provost for Graduate Studies and Research.

Step 5: Committee Review
  • The Graduate Faculty Membership Committee (a sub-committee of the Graduate Executive Committee) reviews the nominations and makes a recommendation to the Graduate School Executive Committee.
  • The Graduate School Executive Committee reviews the recommendations of the membership committee and votes to approve/disapprove the recommendations.
Step 6: Final Decision

6. The Associate Provost of Graduate Studies and Research makes the final decision on each nomination for Full Membership on the Graduate Faculty. 

Step 7: Notification

The Associate Provost of Graduate Studies and Research notifies both the faculty member and the department head/Division Director of the final decision. 

Note on Temporary Appointments:

With the exception ex officio appointments required by statute, all Temporary Graduate Faculty appointments are recommended by the Department Head/Division Director and approved by the Associate Provost of Graduate Studies and Research.
